    NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2011

    HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
HOPE  YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS AND LOOK FORWARD TO A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

LET’S START WITH THE GOOD NEWS FIRST.......

    WELCOME GEDE & SLAMET

A couple of months ago 2 children came into our lives both of whom have been working on the streets of Bali & of course not attending school. We would finally like to welcome Gede & Slamet to their new home.
This hasn't been an easy time for the boys ( or for us ) as they have never experienced the warmth of a family home and all they have known is life on the streets.
To be very honest we all thought this was not going to work in the beginning the boys wanted to be back on the streets and very scared at the prospect of maybe going to school. A corner has been turned and they are settling down and will have a teacher coming to the home to slowly bring them into the wonderful world of knowledge.
We look forward to sharing with them the joy of Christmas and we hope 2012 will bring them happiness & more than anything the chance to be children.

    WE SAY OUR FAREWELLS

We all had to say goodbye to the twins as you know them "Miracle & Marlon".
This has been a very difficult time for everyone especially for our loving staff & children who have given their hearts to these little boys.
Their mother has taken them to Kalimantan and we can only pray now that she truly is healthy & able to give them a decent life.
We tried in vain for her to give things a little longer but sadly she wouldn't listen.
Our love to these little boys who have blossomed in the past couple of years.
You will stay in our hearts forever.

    ENDRO UPDATE

In the previous newsletter we kept you informed on Endro and the successful operation he has undergone in Singapore thanks to a wonderful donation.
It is pleasing to report Endro is home safe and well from Singapore after many hospital visits and time to recover.  Although he now has ongoing medication that he will require for the rest of his life, and needs to be checked regularly in Singapore, the operation was a success and he will lead a much better life as a result!
The wonderful family who opened their home and heart to Endro in Singapore recently sent a letter to us, a letter worth sharing.

Our hearts are open to the Jodie O Shea Orphanage forever.
by Kate, John, Alexander & Olivia Kerr

Bali has always been our favorite family holiday destination & while there in November 2010 our family was fortunate enough to visit the Jodie O Shea Orphanage.

While there we met the most amazing & happy children who were having lots of fun.
Our biggest pleasure was finding out that the main focus of the Management Team is education.
We also totally believe that education is the key to the future of all children. Then & there we knew we had to be more involved in this fantastic safe haven. A few months later we got a phone call asking if we would host Endro, a 15 year old boy, on a trip to Singapore to see a Doctor about a surgery that he had been waiting to have done for the last 2 years. Our instant reaction was Yes.
After a short visit, many tests & the wonderful support of a donation team in Australia, it was agreed that Endo would return to Singapore to have the long awaited surgery & also stay at our home for the period of 1-2 months for his recovery.
The time Endro was with us was not only a life changing experience for him, but I am not sure if he will ever know what his smiling face did for our family.
Having 2 children, aged 10 & 8, that have been blessed with a great life, it was really fantastic to see them interact with Endro & show him the love & care they did.
It was amazing to see that language was no barrier & children can play & laugh despite a language difference - we can all learn from them.
My husband, John & I feel very blessed to have been part of this experience & also very thankful for the wonderful new friends that we met during this time.
We know our paths shall cross again.
Our hearts are open to the Jodie O Shea Orphanage forever & we look forward to being part of another journey with them. We shall see you all on our next visit to Bali.

    Love & hugs,
Kate, John, Alexander & Olivia Kerr

  • Jodie O'Shea Orphanage Newsletter January 2011

We hope everyone had a Happy Christmas and a Safe and Enjoyable start to the New Year.

We have some great activities planned for this year and hope you enjoy being part of it as we continue to improve the lives of all our children living at the Jodie O’Shea home here in Bali .

    GIVING JOY TO OTHERS

On December 15th, Jodie O’Shea children opened their home to 25 children from underprivileged families here in Bali .

The very talented ‘choir’ and musicians gave everyone a wonderful evening of Christmas entertainment.

Our little visitors left after a fabulous dinner and laden with presents to bring a little joy into their lives.

Thank you to our overseas visitors who participated in this special evening.

Pak Fredie brought added fun to the evening and entertained the children with his magic so big thanks to you!

Thanks to Howard and Tom for again sharing this special evening with our children.

As always, there was yummy food, joyous singing and much fun had swimming in the pool.

The Desa Seni is a gorgeous eco friendly village resort and we are very fortunate to have the support each year for the children from the wonderful people there.

    ’ KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN!!’

It is only once a year and it is always their special request.

Thank you to those who made their day so special.

(Photo: Happy Children on Christmas Day with presents and Kentucky !)

Christmas day was as busy as always and on the evening of the 25th, the children were welcomed at the fabulous Hotel Tugu.

Our children had a wonderful feast at "Waroeng Tugu" & then entertained us all once more with their Christmas Carols & magical "Heal the World"

Thanks to all at Hotel Tugu for making this such a special evening for our children

story...his parents had divorced and left their children behind. Our dear

asked for our help. We now have 3 little three year olds!

  • Jodie O'Shea Orphanage Newsletter June 2010
"Oh dear the months have just flown by yet again and promises of sending monthly newsletters have sadly failed!!"

We are very happy to Welcome

Sharon & Noel who arrived a few weeks ago...the usual story that we seem to be hearing over and over again. Their father packs up and leaves his wife and abandons these two precious children. Their mother had no way to feed Sharon & Joel or pay for their much needed education. Sharon & Noel are both happily settled in their new home. Sharon will be attending primary school after the June holidays & Noel will be attending kindergarten

Welcome to your new home Sharon & Noel

    Holiday of a Lifetime

As many of you know Yanto, myself, Jener, Jogi, Lisa,Abi &Ade recently had the adventure of a lifetime. The wonderful Baker family so generously invited us to America to attend their son Jack's Bar Mitzvah. We spent a couple of weeks at their home in Connecticut enjoying the sites of New York & spending time with Lisa, Richard, Jack, Henry & Serena. What didn't we do? Up the Empire State Building, the Lion King on Broadway, amazing desserts at Serendipity & an overnight trip to Boston to see our friends Jaye & Jon...the list goes on.

The highlight of course was Jack's Bar Mitvah which was such a beautiful ceremony attended by close friends & family. The party that followed was the party of all parties held at the Capital Theatre in Greenwich & the children had the best moment of their lives when they sang in front of 300 people. Thank you Richard, Lisa, Jack,Henry & Serena for so lovingly welcoming us into your home & Jack especially to you for choosing to support our children & giving them such inspiration for their futures!

The Miami part of the Holiday

Valentina, her husband Alan and daughters Tatiana & Chloe would not allow us to be in America and not visit them in Miami so after our fabulous 2 weeks in New York we had a further week of excitement in Miami. Tatiana & Valentina both visited Jodie O'Shea in 2009 and the children were thrilled to catch up with them again and share some more fun times. We had another wonderful week, a polo match, Disney on Ice, Universal Studios, trips on Roberts fabulous boat what a great week we had!!! Thank you so much !!

One of the highlights was being able to finally say "thank you" to Anton Dressman, his wife.... and their 2 gorgeous children. Without Anton's help we probably would not have been where we are today, he gave us money so we could build the Jodie O'Shea home & he did this without even having met myself or Yanto. The trust & generosity of a stranger has made such a difference to so many children.

Thank you Anton it was the greatest pleasure to meet you & for you to finally meet some of the children you have helped.

    WELCOMING YOSEP

We want to start this newsletter by welcoming Yosep who arrived to our home just 2 weeks ago.
Yosep is 8 years old and still is unable to read and write. He was abandoned by his parents who divorced and chose to run away to make new lives and leave their little boy behind. For 3 years now he has been living with ‘so called’ relatives who have beaten him on a regular basis.

Children should never be allowed to suffer like this. We hope that we can give Yosep the love and support he needs to be able to recover from his last few years of horror.

Welcome to your new home Yosep

  • Jodie Jodie O’Shea Newsletter June 2008
Firstly let us begin by introducing Pras 4 yrs and his little brother Risky 1 yr who both came to us in May 2008.

Once again the months have flown by & we have come to the end of the academic school year, the children have been very busy with their exams. At the end of July some children will be moving to high school and some others graduating to upper primary. It has been quite a task to find spaces in the local schools as they are extremely over crowded. We are very pleased to announce 3 of our pre school children will be attending the Flower of Knowledge Kindergarten built by The Bali Kindergarten Project

    Trip to Sumba:

Maria, Jener, Adolfus, Runi , Toni, Roni, Titin, Ade, Sriwani and Asnat have all left to visit family in Sumba for 2 weeks of their holiday. One of our priorities for the children is for them to continue a healthy and loving understanding with their families, their cultural background and family values is most important to their social development.

As many of you already know our older children came from a previous orphanage and had many years of unhappiness. They had not seen any family members for more than 5 years & one can only imagine the trauma & suffering that they had endured. In the last few years since having these children under our care we have strived to rebuild their self esteem and sense of belonging. Children are only a product of their environment and it took some time for us to undo the damage and reassure them to feel safe and secure in our care.

Canggu Community school welcomes our children:

Nyong, Rian, Andri, Frans, Yunus, Risaldo, Roni, Sandra, Nutri, Narti, Rince, Emelda and Nike have all been given the wonderful opportunity of spending their Tuesday afternoons together with some volunteer children from Canggu Community School. Playing games and sports and having fun is the essence of these special afternoons together. thank you to the children of CCS for giving your time to our children, they all look forward to their Tuesdays !!!

Another thank you to ALL the students of Canggu Community School for kindly supporting us with their uniform free day.

    Building extension:

The work in progress is finally finished, 4 girls bedrooms, 8 new toilets and a fabulous kitchen/eating area! It’s a dream come true!!! An incredible thank you to our dear friends Paul and Heather without your amazing and continuous support this would never have been possible.
When we are all done cleaning photos will follow in the next newsletter

    Balinese Dance Lessons:

Many of our children have commenced Balinese dance lessons at home twice weekly Ibu Warti comes to teach the girls and boys the art of Balinese dance.
The children’s happiness and laughter beams as they practice dance steps – it is truly a pleasure to see.
Please feel welcome to come and visit to share the class with us!!

Until next time with lots of love,

    Alison, Yanto and Julie

Pepe, Yuni and Dewi bring Santa to Jodie O’Shea

These last months have been very busy indeed. We have had lots of visitors and without listing all the your names individually we want to thank you one and all for generous donations and support. It is with sincere thanks to you all that we are able to “ continue to bring light into the lives of our children.”

    A very special thank you...

A few months ago whilst visiting some of the families of our children in Sumba Alison discovered that one of the fathers of of two of our children Pak Petrus had broken his wrist after having fallen from a roof top more than 2 months ago and had not received any medical attention at all.Not only was he in terrible pain but he had also lost the use of his left hand. Needless to say Alison could not leave him in this condition and we started the process of finding a solution to help in any way we could. There are some wonderful people on the island of Bali... With the help of our dear friend Rena and Yayasan Putri Bali, Doctor Nyoman Riasa donated his time to perform a 5 hour operation on Pak Petrus’s hand, the operation was a huge success and although there will be many months of rehabilitation the results so far are positive. We cannot thank Dr. Riasa enough for his kindness.

Just last week Alison overheard Risaldo one of our newest arrivals joyously singing his heart out in the bathroom…......

With this happy note we will leave you, until next time…

    Lots of love,

    Alison, Yanto and Julie

  • Article "Communities of Indonesia"
In 2005 Alison Chester together with the MUM Foundation (Manusia Untuk Masyarakat) started the Jodie O'Shea Orphanage to Save 15 children who suffered from ill treatment at an Orphanage in Bali. Now, two and a half years later, we return to view Alison's commitment to saving other children with the same light.

Alison Chester, a British born Indonesian citizen, and her husband, Riyanto Samadi, exchange furtive glances that express their anxiety. They won’t reveal the name of the orphanage.

“The children were often beaten, some of them even received electric shocks” explains the 56 years old woman from Liverpool, her throat tight. “Unfortunately there are some orphanages in Bali that sadly profit from disadvantaged children” adds Riyanto Samadi. “To increase their numbers, some of them have agents who patrol in the poor areas and even offer money to the parents to take their children” he continues. The more children there are, the more benefits they receive from donations and subsidies. “Therefore it is good to be aware that some people are not always helping children with the best intentions” explains Alison.

In August 2005, with great difficulty, the couple succeeded in taking 15 little Sumbanese children away from the evil environment and setting up the Jodie O’Shea orphanage in Denpasar. For this business woman, the head of a garment factory in Bali, life changed dramatically the day after the first Bali bombing in 2002. Alison, like many othervolunteers, went to the hospitals in Denpasar to help. She assisted a victim, the Australian Jodie O’Shea until she was evacuated. The pain and the dignity of this young woman left a profound mark on Alison. She decided to spend more time helping people in need, and in memory of the Australian woman who died at only 29 years old, Alison gave her name, Jodie O’Shea to the orphanage that today accommodates 32 children. Many of the children come from the very poor island of Sumba experiencing great misery, but others are from Bali, Ambon and Sumatra.

The proportion by gender is quite even and the age varies from one and a half to seventeen years old.

The Jodie O’Shea project began when Alison and Yanto chose to give money and time to an orphanage. Slowly, over two years, they realised that the children were being abused and the donated money was embezzled. They put a plan in place to save the little Sumbanese from the clutches of the criminal owners. Thanks to the help of a lawyer, the rescue was successful. The venture of the Jodie O’Shea orphanage started off with US$ 30,000,“half of which was donated by one person, a Dutch businessman” explains Alison. Children and families even camped in Alison and Yanto’s garden in their Canggu home until the construction of the home was completed. Some “heavies” were hired by the crooked owners who took advantage of the opportunity to intimidate and threaten them… Sadly, “the dishonest orphanage created in the early nineties is still open in spite of this story of abusive treatment and continues to accommodate even more children” she states bitterly. Alison and her husband are assisted by their friend Julie Le Baube and two Indonesian carers who live at the home. They admit that it was a huge task to undertake this kind of project.

The education of these children is obviously of the highest importance.“How can we make the children’s future secure?” asks Alison who is also mother and grandmother. “We have to be able to recognize their skills, and also consider which qualifications would be useful in their villages if they return, particularly for the young Sumbanese” she adds. At the moment, they all go to school in the local neighbourhood and some of them even go to private schools because of the lack of places in the government schools. The Australian International School kindly allows some of the children to use their computer laboratory to facilitate extra curricular computer lessons. They are very grateful that many of the older boys have been given scholarships by the Canggu Club Soccer Academy.

The MUM Foundation not only heads the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage but also another of Alison’s projects the BKP (Bantul Kindergarten Project) which was started after the devastating earthquake in Jogjakarta, May 2006. 26 kindergartens and one primary school have been successfully rebuilt to date. (The Communities of Indonesia # 1 – January 2007). We can imagine how busy Alison Chester’s life is. She wakes up everyday at 4 am and works often until 9 pm. “I try to have a free Sunday once in a while” she says with a smile. Her goals for the orphanage grow constantly and the team works consistently.

“We are hoping to raise enough money to build a new extension in 2008 which will help to accommodate a further 30 children” says Alison. Indeed, the buildings are spacious and well-thought out, they offer a pleasant living environment to the children who all seem to be happy and healthy. Meanwhile, the needs list seems to be endless. In the short term, the orphanage always needs the basic necessities of food, clothing, hygiene products. Also fans, mirrors, cushions and pillows, paints, swimming lessons, Indonesian books, computers, new walls, a minivan to transport the children…
